Throwback Thursday 22 August: flashback to 2017

Another trip to 2017. A full suite of doll customization land. These include repainting, rerooting, restyling hair, redressing, and/or sewing differently-scaled replica ensembles.

  1. Sweater Twin Busy Ken and Sweater Girl Barbie customized – dolls, vintage and modern fashion pieces. This 1972 Ken came in his original jeans and red shirt and smelled like smoke. I bought him some white Ken pants, gave him some Elvis boots, a circa 1964 Ken sweater, and made him a silver dickie. He’s one of my favorite dolls. His twin brother is a 1991 Hawaiian Ken wearing the same sweater from a different circa 1964 Ken fashion in blue, black, and tan tones, but I customized him in a different year so he doesn’t appear here. Barbie is a reproduction doll, 1997 Wedding Day Barbie in titian (redhead). She wears modern shoes, but an original 1959 Barbie fashion that was reproduced in all-blue and in all-pink under a different title in the early 1960s. I decided that since they’re both wearing bright orange that they’re boyfriend-girlfriend.

  1. Barbie ♥ AG Suits Me Fine customization – doll, Fashion. This 1997 Barbie Loves Elvis doll originally had a ponytail. I cut and restyled her hair to resemble a 1966 “American Girl” Barbie with the curlier, more bouffant version of the blunt pageboy cut with bangs that came out in 1965. The Suits Me Fine fashion was a Barbie Collector club exclusive from the year 2000.

  1. Best Fashion Friend 28-inch doll customization – doll, hot glue, thread, vintage sheet fabric, felt, craft roses, ribbon, lace fabric. I think this doll is technically Barbie’s Latina friend Teresa, but she has the Summer headmold, so I still call her Summer. I made this outfit for her to be a scaled-up version of Francie doll’s circa 1968 fashion Tenteriffic. The vintage sheet fabric didn’t have the blue in it, but I think it was close enough.

  1. Cinderella 6” doll customization – doll, fabric, vintage vinyl, hot glue, silver fabric, fuzzy fabric, thread. This 1995 Perfume Princess Cinderella doll is 6.5 inches tall and came with a hole in her back so that her perfume could be poured in there, and then applied with a dipper/cap. I made her a teeny version of Barbie’s circa 1969 fashion Snug Fuzz. The white vinyl piping/belt is “scrap” that I yanked out of a vintage Barbie case.

  1. Teen Skipper doll customization – doll, fashion pieces, boots, acrylic paint. I cut and restyled this circa 2000 Skipper doll’s hair, and then I repainted her face based on the 1966-1968 Japanese-market Francie dolls. She’s wearing a 60s-esque MOD ensemble of 2013 midge dress, aftermarket hose, c.2002 Barbie boots, and a circa 2008 reproduction of a circa 1968 Barbie coat.

  1. Sun Sun Sensation Skipper customization – doll, saran doll hair, swimsuit. I had bought a spare 1992 Sun Sensation Skipper to get parts to complete my original doll. Instead of reselling or otherwise cannibalizing this doll, I decided to give her this 1971-1976 Malibu Francie swimsuit and rerooted her so that she bears a faint resemblance to the 1972 Japanese-Market Sun Sun (Malibu) Skipper doll.
